In September 1997 Charles Spencer stood in Westminster Abbey and spoke about his sister to a watching world. Nearly thirty years later he has written the book. Penguin publishes Swan Song: Diana, my sister on Audible on 22 September 2026, unabridged and read by Spencer himself. It is on pre-order now and the running time has not been listed yet.

This page therefore goes up before release, and it describes what is coming rather than judging a recording nobody has heard.

The brother's version of a life everyone thinks they know

Penguin frames the book in Spencer's own words. Asked what it was like growing up with Diana, his first thought is always that he does not know what it was like not to grow up with her. The two youngest Spencers were inseparable as children, secretly calling one another Duch and Carlos, roaming the family estate, enduring extremely challenging boarding schools, surviving terrifying nannies and helping each other through the agony of their parents' divorce.

Everything changed when Diana married the Prince of Wales, now King Charles III, and became a global icon overnight. Spencer watched his older sister serve the world's marginalised and relish being a mother to her sons, while a barbaric press pursued her and her royal marriage crumbled, leaving her desperately alone. The book runs through to that black night in August 1997 and the week that followed.

Why the author narrating this one matters

Spencer reads it himself, which for a memoir this personal is the right call. His writing already has a reputation for frankness. The Times praised its searing frankness and wistfully beautiful prose, the Daily Telegraph called him acutely observant, and the Financial Times described an earlier book as a moving, heartbreaking memoir.

The risk with an author reading his own grief is that the delivery either flattens the material or overwhelms it. What a listener can count on is that nobody else could bring the same authority to the childhood chapters, and those are the part of this story that has never properly been told in public.

A crowded shelf, and what makes this one different

There is no shortage of books about Diana, and almost all of them are written from the outside looking in. Swan Song is the opposite. It comes from the person who knew her before the world did, who shared a childhood with her, and who was left to speak for her at the end.

It arrives close to the thirtieth anniversary of her death, and it was already the number one pre-order in royal historical biographies on Audible weeks before publication. Whether the appetite is for the history or for the family voice, the audio edition is the one where that voice is literal.

Swan Song: Diana, my sister is out on Audible on 22 September 2026, unabridged, read by Charles Spencer. The running time has not been published, so plan for a full memoir rather than a short listen. If you are going to hear this story at all, hearing it from her brother is the version that will be hardest to switch off.
