David Baldacci is bringing Aloysius Archer back for a fourth case, and the pre-order is already open. Boom Town runs eleven hours, unabridged, published by Grand Central Publishing, and Audible has it down for 13 April 2027. That is a long wait, so what follows is a guide to what is coming rather than a verdict on a recording nobody has heard yet.

One detail is still blank. Amazon lists the author, the publisher and the running time, but no narrator has been announced for this one yet.

A letter, a dead hermit and a favour Archer cannot refuse

The setup comes straight from Grand Central's own summary. Liberty Callahan, the former love of Archer's life, walks into his West Hollywood office because her friend Betty Sams needs help. A mysterious letter has been delivered by a wild-haired hermit to Betty's employer, the enigmatic medium Father John, and it has set off a chain of events. Before Archer can dig any deeper, the hermit turns up dead. Officially a heart attack. Unofficially murdered.

From there the case widens fast. It runs from the mansions of Bel Air into a world of atomic secrets, spies working for more than one country and a doomsday weapon that could end everything. The police are covering up murders, the FBI wants Archer to drop it, and he keeps pulling anyway. In a city built on dreams and deception, trusting anyone turns out to be the most dangerous move available.

Where it sits in the Archer series

Boom Town is the fourth Archer novel, after One Good Deed in 2019, A Gambling Man in 2021 and Dream Town in 2022. Archer is a World War II veteran who came out of the army and into private investigation, and the series has been moving him westward and forward in time ever since. Liberty Callahan is not a new face either, which is part of why the opening scene lands the way it does.

Eleven hours is a manageable length for a Baldacci. The hardcover is listed at 528 pages, so the audio is not being rushed, and it sits comfortably inside a week of commutes rather than a month of them. For listeners new to Archer, the earlier three books stand on their own well enough that starting here is possible, though the Callahan thread will read flatter without them.

Cold War paranoia in the City of Angels

What looks different this time is the scale. The first three Archer books were crime novels with a period backdrop. This one puts atomic secrets and foreign intelligence services in the middle of the plot, which pushes the series closer to espionage than to the private-eye cases it started with. The publisher's own pitch calls it a story that could be ripped from today's headlines, and the choice of a doomsday weapon as the stake makes that fairly plain.

That shift matters for the audio in particular. Period noir lives on voice, on the rhythm of the narration and the restraint of the delivery, and a plot with this many competing agencies needs a reader who can keep them apart. Whoever Grand Central casts will be doing more work than the running time suggests. It is worth watching the listing between now and April for that credit to appear.

Boom Town lands on 13 April 2027, eleven hours, unabridged, from Grand Central Publishing. It is the fourth outing for Aloysius Archer and the one that moves him from murder cases into Cold War territory. If you have followed the series this far, the pre-order needs no argument. If you have not, there are three books and roughly two years to fix that before this one arrives.
