Smeg, It’s Back: The First New Red Dwarf Novel in Three Decades

For fans of British comic science fiction, this is an event. A Prequel That Takes Us Back Before the Beginning

Cleverly, Titan is a prequel set before the events of the very first television episode, aboard the mining ship Red Dwarf as it orbits Saturn’s moon Titan and the crew prepares for shore leave. Two of the lowest-ranking crewmen have schemes of their own. Arnold Rimmer is desperately chasing illicit exam-cheating technology to finally win the promotion he is convinced he deserves, while Dave Lister is plotting to smuggle a certain cat aboard as part of a scheme to get himself back to Earth. Naturally, everything goes catastrophically wrong. A cryptic message from the future flings them into a madcap race across realities, through the seedy, dangerous Downtown underbelly of the outpost, dodging bizarre alien threats and a lethal, mysterious antagonist.

For anyone who knows what fate has in store for these characters, there is a delicious irony in watching Rimmer and Lister bicker their way through the last ordinary days before their lives change forever.

Unmistakably Red Dwarf

This is not a novelisation of old episodes. Unlike the earlier books, Titan tells a genuinely original story, the first Red Dwarf novel to strike out on its own rather than reworking television scripts. And yet every page crackles with the show’s trademark voice: the snobbery and cowardice of Rimmer, the slobbish decency of Lister, the absurd technobabble and the gleeful sci-fi silliness. Grant and Marshall clearly relish the sandbox, packing the story with big ideas, sharp one-liners and the kind of daft cosmic logic that has always powered the franchise. Critics have been warm, with SFX, Starburst and SciFiNow all awarding four stars and hailing it as a wonderful addition to Dwarf lore.

Chris Barrie Is the Perfect Narrator

Casting Chris Barrie, the man who has played Rimmer since 1988, to narrate the entire book is a masterstroke. He voices every character himself, and his impressions and comic timing are impeccable, instantly transporting you aboard the ship. Longtime fans will remember that Barrie also narrated the audiobooks of the original novels, so this feels like a homecoming, complete with Howard Goodall’s beloved theme music. His performance is a huge part of why the audiobook is so easy to fall into and so hard to switch off.

The Verdict

Red Dwarf: Titan is a smart, hilarious, hugely affectionate return to the ship that fans never wanted to leave, and a brilliant jumping-on point for newcomers curious about the fuss. With Chris Barrie narrating and a genuinely fresh story to tell, it is pure comfort listening with real invention behind the laughs. Available free on Audible, it is an absolute no-brainer for anyone who has ever wanted to be a fly on the wall of the Red Dwarf. Everybody’s dead, Dave, but the comedy is very much alive.
