Barack Obama is hosting a series about books, and it is an Audible exclusive. A Great Book with Barack Obama arrives on 24 September 2026, six episodes, made by Audible together with Higher Ground, the media company he runs with Michelle Obama. Audible frames every episode around the same question: what do the stories we love tell us about the world we live in and the world we want to create. Obama's own line about the selection is that great books have always helped him work out who he is and what he believes, and that these six have stayed with him throughout his life. It is a format that lives or dies on whether the conversations go past the summary, and six episodes is short enough to keep them from padding.

A list that will surprise nobody who has been paying attention

Five of the six are American, and most of them are books Obama has talked about in public before. He sat down with Marilynne Robinson in Iowa in 2015 for a long published conversation about Gilead and about faith and democracy, and Toni Morrison has been a fixture of his reading lists for years. Baldwin, McCarthy and Robert Penn Warren fill out a shelf that is essentially a course in how Americans have written about race, violence and power.

The outlier is le Carré, and it is the one that makes the series interesting. Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy is a British Cold War novel about institutional rot and the cost of secrecy, and putting it next to Song of Solomon and Gilead suggests the season is not only about identity. A former president discussing a novel where the intelligence service cannot trust itself is a conversation worth queuing up for.

What has not been announced yet

The guests are still under wraps. Audible describes them as some of the most compelling thinkers, writers and artists of our time and says the names will come later, which is the one real unknown left in the listing. The total running time has not been posted either, so the only firm numbers so far are six episodes and a 24 September date.

Higher Ground handling production is the detail worth noting. This is the same outfit behind the Obamas' audio and film work, and it means the series is being made rather than merely recorded. On the practical side, it is a pre-order on Audible now, so it drops into your library on release day without you having to remember it.
