The text arrives late at night. "I honestly have no clue what is going on. This is very weird." It is from Joel, and Joel is somewhere in the forests of New England, inside a castle, and his father is in another country holding a phone. Then the messages stop. When they start again they say the group has left, that things had gone badly wrong, and that everything is fine now.

Most parents would ask a few careful questions and let it go. Joel's father is Jon Ronson, who has spent thirty years walking into rooms where men are doing things they would rather not explain, so he went to find out what the castle was. The Castle is what he came back with, a Sunday Times number one bestseller, and on Audible he reads it himself for Penguin.

A castle in the woods, and who is inside it

The castle turns out to be a doorway into what Ronson calls an underworld of unmoored and disaffected men. He starts pulling on the thread and the thread keeps going: men who have been cut loose from whatever used to hold them, gathered around ideas about manhood that contradict each other, in places most of us never see.

What makes it more than a survey is that the castle does not stay at arm's length. The investigation turns into a cat-and-mouse story with a secret at the centre of it, and at one point two recently released murderers are on their way to pay Ronson a personal visit. He is not narrating this from a safe distance. He is in it, and he sounds like a man who is not entirely sure he should be.

That is the engine of the listen. There is a real mystery about the castle and it is withheld properly, so the reporting and the suspense pull in the same direction instead of taking turns.

The questions he keeps asking

Ronson has always built his books out of questions that sound absurd written down and turn out to be load-bearing. What exactly is "Princessing"? Why did a lawn care influencer dress as a baby in front of billions of viewers, and why was the fallout catastrophic? Each one opens onto something larger: the death of the utopian factory towns, the false promise of influencer culture, institutions quietly coming apart, and a new appetite for saying and doing things online that nobody would risk in a room.

He is funny about all of it, which is the part people underestimate. The comedy is not decoration. It is how he gets people to keep talking, and it is why a book about a masculinity crisis does not turn into a lecture. Louis Theroux called it vintage Ronson, wise, timely and extremely funny, and that is a fair summary of the register.

Why the audio is the version to get

Ronson narrates it, and with this writer that is not a small preference. The nervous, disbelieving voice on the page is his actual voice, and hearing him ask a question he is slightly afraid of the answer to does something the print cannot. If you know him from radio you already know the effect.

The Penguin recording also carries two things the book does not. The original music is composed by Joel Ronson, the son whose texts set the whole thing off, which is a quietly remarkable credit. And there is an exclusive bonus chapter drawn from Things Fell Apart, his BBC podcast, so the audiobook is the fuller edition rather than the convenient one. At just under nine hours it is a comfortable week.

The reporter behind it

Jon Ronson is a British-American journalist and film-maker who has spent his career among extremists, conspiracists and the quietly strange. Them: Adventures with Extremists came in 2001, The Men Who Stare at Goats in 2004, then The Psychopath Test and So You've Been Publicly Shamed, the two that made him a name outside Britain and sold in the millions.

For most of the last decade he has worked in audio rather than print. Things Fell Apart, his BBC Radio 4 series tracing the origins of the culture wars, ran from 2021 to 2024, went to number one in the UK and Ireland and won the Broadcasting Press Guild award for podcast of the year. The Castle is his return to the written page after that stretch, which is why it arrived with the attention it did.
