Carl is standing in the snow in his boxer shorts and a leather jacket, trying to coax his ex-girlfriend's show cat out of a tree, when every building on Earth sinks into the ground. The people inside go with them. What rises in their place is a dungeon with eighteen floors that wraps around the whole planet, and a cheerful voice invites the few survivors to come inside. Carl picks up the cat and goes in. That cat is Princess Donut, and within a few chapters she can talk, insult him and shoot lasers from her eyes.

The hook of Dungeon Crawler Carl is that the dungeon is a show. Alien audiences across the galaxy watch the crawl, and the way to stay alive is not to be strong but to be watchable. Kill a goblin with flair and a sponsor might drop you a loot box. Bore the viewers and you are on your own. Each floor also has a clock, so Carl and Donut have days, not weeks, to find the stairs down before the level closes around them.

That setup could have been a one-joke parody of video games. Instead Matt Dinniman uses it to write something angrier and funnier than it looks. The jokes are frequent and often filthy, the violence is graphic, and underneath it sits a steady contempt for the bored, rich spectators who turned a planet into content. Carl is an ordinary guy from the Coast Guard, and his main weapon for most of this book is his bare feet. He keeps going because stopping means the show wins.

What the first book actually covers

This is the entry point, and it stays small on purpose. The book takes Carl and Donut through the opening floors of the dungeon, where the two learn how the game works, meet their tutorial guide Mordecai, and start to figure out how little the system that runs the place cares whether they live. Stats, menus and achievement pop-ups appear on screen, in the style of the LitRPG genre, but you do not need to have played a video game to follow them. The AI that announces each one is a character in its own right, and a nasty one.

What makes the volume work on its own is the relationship at its center. Carl is practical and stubborn. Donut is vain, sharp and genuinely brave, and she is the one the audience falls in love with first. Their bickering carries the quiet stretches, and the quiet stretches are where the book lets you feel what has happened to the world.

Why the audio is the version to get

Most people who love this series met it through their ears, and the reason is Jeff Hays. The audiobook is published by Audible Studios and produced with Hays's company Soundbooth Theater, and it sounds less like a single narrator than a small troupe. Hays gives Carl a flat, tired decency, Donut a grand, clipped voice that is funny on its own, and the system AI an oily brightness that makes the pop-up messages land like punchlines. Light sound effects mark the game notifications, which keeps the stat screens from dragging.

Critic Laura Miller, writing in Slate, called out Hays's preternatural talent and range and noted that his one-man productions sound like full-cast recordings. That matches the experience. At a little over thirteen hours this is a medium-length listen, and the pacing never sags, because Hays plays the comedy fast and the horror slow.

Fair warnings before you press play

The humor is crude and the body count is high, including people and creatures you have come to like. If you want a gentle fantasy, this is not it. Some listeners also find the longer fight scenes hard to picture without the text in front of them, since the action can get mechanically dense. On audio, Hays's clear character voices help, but a few set pieces still move faster than the mind's eye.

The other caveat is that this book ends with the story barely started. Eight volumes now exist, and the series gets bigger and stranger as it goes. Treat this one as the pilot episode. It tells you everything about whether the show is for you.

The cat portrait artist who wrote it

Matt Dinniman had been publishing for years before any of this, starting with a small-press trilogy, The Shivered Sky, in 2003, and a two-book LitRPG series, Dominion of Blades, in 2017 and 2018. For much of that time he made his living drawing portraits of cats for their owners at pet shows. A Persian he met at one of those shows became Princess Donut.

He began posting Dungeon Crawler Carl as free chapters on the web serial site Royal Road at the end of 2019, by his own account as something stupid and fun he did not plan to show anyone. The pandemic changed that, and he self-published the book in 2020. The series has since sold millions of copies, Ace Books picked up the print rights, and a live-action television adaptation for Peacock from Seth MacFarlane's production company went into production in 2026, with Hays returning to voice Donut. Dinniman's spin-off Operation Bounce House won the 2026 Dragon Award for best science fiction novel.

None of that history is required to enjoy the first book. It is still the place everyone starts, and an Audible free trial covers it in full.
