December knows exactly how her country dies. She has lived through the plague that creeps up the colored rivers, through the murders at court and the civil war that follows, and she has grown old carrying all of it. Then she wakes on the morning of her twenty-first birthday with every memory intact. The land is still whole. The plague has not arrived. Nobody has any reason to believe a young woman who claims to remember the future.

So she sails up the River Violet toward the king's court with a talkative young priestess named Amaal and a would-be fashion designer named Tamantha. In her way stand officials who want proof she cannot give, a court full of schemers, and Count Flint, a rogue who might open the right doors. The story is told by Hoid, the wandering storyteller who turns up across Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere, and he keeps pausing to explain the rivers of demon blood that keep this kingdom alive.

What lifts The Fires of December above a clever setup is the question Sanderson says he built it on. If you could redo your life, would you want to, knowing it would erase the experiences you came to value? December is a woman in her eighties inside a body that is barely adult, and the book is at its best when it sits with how tired that makes her.

A storybook with a bruise under it

Readers who loved Tress of the Emerald Sea will recognize the shape. This is a fairy-tale journey with a plucky heroine, odd companions, a river instead of a sea, and a narrator who cannot resist a joke. Underneath, it is the saddest of the Hoid books so far. December's grief is real, and the romance with Flint is complicated by the fact that she looks like a girl and feels like a widow.

The supporting cast carries the warmth. Amaal talks too much and means every word. Tamantha treats clothing as strategy. A demon cat called Beautiful attaches itself to December and steals its scenes. Early reviewers have singled out the opening chapter, and it earns the praise. It is quiet and devastating, and it sets a bar the rest of the book spends its time chasing.

Where the critics land

The early response from genre bloggers is warm with honest reservations. Will Swardstrom at FanFiAddict called the book charming and electric, placed it closest to Tress in pace and feel, and said it works without any prior Cosmere reading.

Arsh Goyal, writing on Substack, loved December and the emotional core but felt the explanations of Cosmere magic sometimes pulled focus from her, and argued that longtime readers will get more out of it than newcomers. A fair middle ground: you can start here and follow every beat, but a few winks are aimed at people who already know who Hoid is. Some readers also find Hoid's breezy modern voice sits oddly against the heaviest moments. If that bothered you in Tress, it will bother you here.

Why the audio is the version to get

Michael Kramer is the voice of the Cosmere for many listeners. With Kate Reading he recorded all of The Wheel of Time and The Stormlight Archive, and he narrated Tress of the Emerald Sea alone. Hoid is a character he has been playing for years. He gives the storyteller a dry, amused warmth and keeps the priestess, the designer and the count distinct without turning them into cartoons. Listeners have been consistent in praising how clearly he separates the cast.

The production comes from Macmillan Audio with Sanderson's own Dragonsteel. Sanderson launched it in an unusual way, releasing two chapters a week on YouTube with Kramer's narration and his own introductions, so a good chunk of the audio was public before the full book arrived. At just under thirteen hours it is a moderate commitment by Sanderson standards, closer to Tress than to a Stormlight doorstop, and a single narrator suits a story that is, in the end, one man telling you about one woman.

The author and the series around it

Brandon Sanderson is the biggest commercial name in fantasy today. He broke through with Elantris and the Mistborn trilogy, then was chosen to finish Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time after Jordan's death, which gave him his first number one bestseller. The Stormlight Archive became his signature. In 2022 he raised more than forty million dollars on Kickstarter for four surprise novels, still the largest campaign in the platform's history, and two of those books became the first entries in this loose series.

The Fires of December is the third of what Sanderson calls Hoid's Travails, after Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter. The books share only their narrator and can be read in any order. Sanderson announced this one at his Dragonsteel Nexus convention in Salt Lake City and summed up the series premise simply: terrible things happen to Hoid, and he tells you a story about it. The audiobook arrived ahead of the hardcover, which does not reach stores until later this year, so listening is the easiest way to get it now. The Audible free trial covers it.
