Sally Hepworth has built a reputation for domestic thrillers that balance emotional intelligence with razor-edged suspense, from The Good Sister to The Soulmate, but Mad Mabel may be her most entertaining audiobook yet. It’s sly, funny, quietly unsettling, and completely addictive from the opening chapters.

At the center is Elsie Mabel Fitzpatrick, an eighty-one-year-old neighborhood fixture whose sharp tongue and suspicious history make her instantly unforgettable. Hepworth plays brilliantly with assumptions about age, innocence, and guilt, layering the story with secrets that unfold across decades without ever losing momentum. The mystery twists elegantly, but what lingers is the emotional undercurrent: loneliness, friendship, and the strange ways people justify survival.

A Performance That Elevates Every Reveal

The audiobook truly shines through its dual narration. Hannah Fredericksen and Jenny Seedsman give the story texture and rhythm, capturing both the dark humor and the simmering tension without overplaying either. Their performances make the shifts between past and present feel seamless, and the dialogue crackles with personality.

At nine hours, the pacing is remarkably tight. There’s no filler here—every revelation lands with precision, building toward a finale that feels earned rather than engineered. Mad Mabel is the rare mystery audiobook that’s equally gripping and deeply humane.
